Any business in British Columbia BC with 20 or more employees must establish a functioning joint health and safety committee in the workplace. This course aims at helping participants to identify and interpret British Columbia BC JHSC member's functions and duties and to carry out their responsibilities to promote workplace health and safety. In BC, WorkSafeBC OHS regulations require that all potential joint health and safety committee members receive 8 hours of instruction and training to competently fulfill their duties as committee members.

According to WorkSafeBC OHS Regulations, all businesses with 20 or more employees must have a functioning JHSC committee. A Minimum of 4 members must be on your joint safety committee and present at your monthly JHSC meeting. However, more JHSC members may be required on your committee based on the size and hazard rating of your business or if ordered by a worksafebc officer. ALL MEMBERS MUST BE CERTIFIED AND TRAINED AS PER REGULATIONS. Half of the committee members can be management reps and the other half can be employee reps (50-50). You cannot have more management reps on your committee than employee reps. You can have more employee reps than management reps (i.e. 2 managers; 4 employees). Employee Reps must be elected by the workers. Your Joint Health and Safety Committee must meet together at a minimum of once per month.

Yes, all members of your joint health and safety committee, in any province, need to go through some form of training. It will make little sense to train only a few members and leave the other members without any form of training. Goverment Safety Officers may also order that a joint committee be established in any other workplace or even if you have less than 20 workers. A JHSC joint health and safety committee in BC must have at least four members, and at least half of the members must be worker representatives. For the purpose of a joint committee, a worker representative must be someone who does not exercise managerial functions. Managerial functions generally relate to the overall direction at the workplace and may include disciplining workers and representing management in labour relations matters.A government safety officer may require you to have more than 4 members on your committee depending on the size of your business, number of employees, number of departments, number of locations and hazard rating. We recommend you have at least 6 members on your committee as a minimum (2 management reps, 4 employee reps). 1 management rep and the other 1 employee rep can be trained as alternates.
